Colleen presented "Practically Speaking: Considering Listening and Questioning to Enhance Oral Language" to a group of enthusiastic elementary teachers. During this interactive session teachers had the opportunity to review highlights from the last session, reflect on what was tried and what worked well and reach to understand the role of listening and questioning to enhance oral language.

  According to Don Tapscott, online reading is more complex than book reading. "The online reader must not only read the text and understand it, but create his own mental journey as he clicks on the links to search for information. Because the reader is doing these two things at the same time, online reading comprehension becomes by definition more complex (Tapscott, 2009).

What does this mean for teachers? How can we support students in gaining the online reading skills they need to be successful?

Below is an 8 minute video on the different kinds of strategies needed in online reading. Some suggested uses for this video include:
a. Individual teachers can watch it for their own professional growth.
b. It could be shared at a staff meeting or department meeting.
c. It could be shown to older students and used as a discussion prompt.
